Standard Concrete has all the products you need to prepare for winter weather. We carry various types of ice melts, shovels, ice scrapers, and broadcast spreaders. Choosing the correct ice melt can be difficult, as you need to be cautious. You should consider the surface you are putting it on, the outside temperature, your landscaping & vegetation, and whether it is pet friendly or not.
Unfortunately, not everyone understands how deicers work. Most people just toss salt on the ground and hope for results. Others shy away from using salt, as they believe that applying deicer will result in chipped sidewalks or damaged vegetation.
In reality; the proper application, usage, and disposal of deicers will prevent most or all potential side effects.
Here are a few tips to get the best performance out of whichever deicer you choose:
- Before applying deicing salt, clear as much loose snow and ice from the surface as possible. This allows the crystals to penetrate remaining ice immediately.
- Always check the label and follow manufacturer instructions. As a general rule of thumb, use one-half to one cup of deicing salt per square yard.
- You should leave a gap between the surface being deiced and any nearby vegetation. Plow or shovel away from and do not pile up snow in grassy areas. This will prevent damage to surrounding vegetation.
- Once the treated ice melts completely, remove the remaining slush to keep the sidewalk safe.
Application tips aside, there is a lot of confusion as to which type of products will do the best job removing ice. To clear up any misconceptions, keep the following ice melt products that Standard Concrete carries in mind:
Standard Concrete’s most popular and least expensive ice melt is rock salt. It is our top seller because it is effective, readily available, affordable, and easy to handle. Sometimes referred to as Halite or Sodium Chloride, rock salt works by forming a brine solution of salt and water, which lowers the freezing point and melts the ice. This product is perfect if you are trying to melt ice on asphalt or gravel. Rock salt can be damaging to concrete and vegetation. It will work with temperatures above 5°F and will provide instant traction on snow and ice.
Standard Concrete sells rock salt in 50# bags. You will get a 10% discount on full skid purchases of 56 bags.
Standard Concrete’s second most popular ice melt is calcium chloride. It is not as inexpensive as rock salt but will save you money in the long run if you are applying it to concrete. It also works at lower temperatures than rock salt and is effective down to -25°F. Calcium can leave an oily residue and can harm vegetation if over applied.
Once in contact with the ice, calcium chloride also forms a brine like rock salt, which rapidly lowers the freezing point of water to melt snow and ice quickly.
Standard Concrete sells calcium flakes in 50# bags. You will receive a 10% discount on full skid purchases of 48 bags.
Standard Concrete also sells magnesium chloride. This product is effective at melting snow and ice down to 0°F. Magnesium is considered the least harmful deicer to concrete, vegetation, and waterways. Like other deicers, it can be harmful if you over apply it, but is considered less invasive since it is a naturally occurring mineral.
